ROAD SAFETY MEASURES IN THIRUVARUR DISTRICT
To prevent road accidents and to save precious lives, the strategy of the Government on road safety measures is focused mainly on three major thrust areas viz.,
- Preventive Measures
- Surveillance and detections and
- Enforcement measures
Road Safety Programme:
To create awareness among School/College students, Drivers and Conductors of buses and all other road users Road Safety Programme was celebrated throughout the district.
District Road Safety Committee:
District Road Safety Committee constituted Inter Departmental Team of Officers comprising Police, Transport and Highways Department has been formed by the District Collector, Thiruvarur for the investigations of the fatal accidents critically analyzing the data and to offer specific information and suggestions for preventive remedial to avert such accidents in future.
Preventive Measures:
Based on the Accident prone roads and spots identified by the District Road Safety Committee of Thiruvarur District, the District Collector, Thirvarur has restricted Speed limits of various vehicles plying in the District and released a Thiruvarur District Gazette No.8 dated 11.11.2017 to that effect.
Air Pollution Management Measures:
In order to solve the problem of automobile pollution all the vehicles which are over one year of age should undergo emission testing. Three Private Emission Testing Centre are functioning in the Thiruvarur District and all the vehicles which come to Regional Transport Office and Unit office for any transaction are now compulsorily subjected to Pollution Under Control Certificate.

Learner’s Licence
Who can apply for Learner’s Licence?
- Any person who has completed 16 years of age may get a license for driving a Motor Cycle without Gear – Not exceeding 50 cc.
- Any person who has completed 18 years of age may get a license for driving a Motor Cycle with Gear and Light Motor Vehicle.
- Any person who has completed 20 years of age may get a license for driving a Transport Vehicle, if he/she has One year’s experience in driving a Light Motor vehicle and has obtained a badge.
- A written test will be conducted through computers for the persons who are appearing for Learner’s License.
- Applicants who have passed the preliminary test can collect their learner’s license on the same day.

Driving Licence
- Who can apply for a Driving Licence? A person who has obtained Learner’s Licence may apply for Driving Licence after 30 days and before six months from the date of issue of Learner’s Licence.
- What are the documents to be submitted?

- Form 5 (only for those who have undergone training in a Driving School)
- Form 15 (those who have undergone training in a Driving School)
- Documents of vehicle in which applicant proposes to appear for test of competence to drive (such as Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, Pollution under Control Certificate, Fitness Certificate in case of Transport Vehicle).
- Consent letter from vehicle owner to conduct driving test in his vehicle, if the vehicle is not owned by the applicant.

Addition of a New Class of Vehicle to a Driving License
- Who can apply for endorsement in the Driving License?
- The person should have a valid driving license.
- Should have completed 20 years of age for Transport Vehicles with 1 year experience in LMV & Badge.

BADGE FOR DRIVING PUBLIC SERVICE VEHICLE
Anyone who drives a Public Service Vehicle such as a bus, auto – rickshaw, Taxi etc., should obtain a badge from the Transport Department. Persons with 6 months driving experience in Light Motor Vehicles and 2 years experience in Heavy Motor Vehicles may apply for the badge. The antecedents of applicants are verified from the Police Department before grant of Public Service Vehicle Badge.
